Greetings everyone,
We just wanted to give you an update on all things property at the church. Welcoming people back into the building after such a long absence has meant that we have some catch ups to do as far as maintenance. The Garden Angels have been working very hard on the grounds and the planting. We have gone to a new lawn service this month, Garity’s Grass, and we are hopeful they can provide some weeding support to the Angels.
We are planning a cleanup day once the weather cools down and you will be receiving more information about that coming up for the Fall. The biggest property issue is regarding access to the church. As you probably know, the church has been locked for the past few months due to a security concern. A camera doorbell was installed at the main entrance that allows us to monitor people coming and going through that door. It allows an excellent view of the parking lot and can be accessed any time day or night. The camera alone has increased safety by 10-fold.
As of the June Session meeting, there has not been a decision about what to do in the future but we are active in discussing options. For now, the church will remain locked. The church is generally staffed Monday and Wednesday, 8 to 5 and Friday 8 to noon. During those hours you can ring the doorbell to gain entry. This does not mean you cannot get into the church when you need to. We have installed a lock box with a key by the kitchen door. (We would post the code here but then it will be available to anyone on the Internet.)
Outside groups are still meeting as before but there has been concern about people having access to the food bank. Again, during office hours, anyone can come by. In researching other food banks in the area, all food banks have stated hours that people visit. We have been very unique in that anyone could walk in 24/7and get something if they needed it. For now, if you hear of someone who needs food and they cannot come during office hours, there are options. Arrangements can be made for anyone by appointment. You are welcome to meet someone at the church and open the door for them; if that is not possible, I am sure someone else from the church would be willing to do it. We will continue to get food to those in need. We just need to be a little more deliberate about it for now.
If you would like the code for the box, contact Kim or me. If you use the key, please return it to the box immediately after opening the door so it will be there for the next person. I actually monitor the church and am notified if someone rings the bell or approaches the church. If it is outside of office hours, I generally speak to whomever it is and am able to help. The Session appreciates your patience as we work to navigate the changing world in which we find ourselves.
As a shameless plug, people are needed for the property committee. If you have some time to dedicate to service, please let me know. I would love to be able to meet once a month virtually for the most part. You can reach me at vmcmorrough@gmail.com or 706-892-4440.
Peace and blessings,
Vicki
