Reaching Out in Partnership
Today we live in a global village, where we are called to reach out in partnership to those in need around the world. Nacoochee Presbyterian responds to the call through global missions in Guatemala, Indonesia, and Nicaragua. We also provide financial support for a number of ministries of the Presbyterian Church.
GUATEMALA
We work in partnership with the Christian Mam Women for Development, an association of women from 36 villages in the western highlands of Guatemala. With over 500 members, the association manages a small loan program for poor women, has a weekend school in primary and secondary education, has a one-year training program in sewing, and provides maternity and child health support in remote areas unserved by government health services. In response to the Association’s request, our church leads and supports an annual workshop on a subject of their choosing. Topics range from microfinance to self-esteem, environmental sustainability, and mental health issues that result from dealing with poverty, abuse, abandonment, and trauma. NPC’s endowment fund supports these workshops and contributes additional funds for clinics, schools, and homes damaged by earthquakes and other natural disasters.
NICARAGUA WITH AMIGOS FOR CHRIST
Individuals from NPC participate regularly in Amigos for Christ, based in Buford, Georgia. Projects include service trips to Nicaragua to dig water distribution systems and build schools, houses, and feeding centers. NPC members have also tended the Amigos farm in Nicaragua to grow food for schoolchildren, and they have worked with women to develop a paper beading microenterprise. From here at home, opportunities have included securing school furniture, supporting small business opportunities through the purchase of Bead Amigas jewelry made from paper beads, and sponsorship of students for secondary and university education.
