On October 21, 2019, seven activists will go on trial in Brunswick, Georgia, for their prophetic witness. They need our prayers and support.
On April 4, 2018, they entered the Kings Bay Trident Submarine base in St. Marys, Georgia, undertaking various nonviolent actions such as pouring blood, hammering on a statue of the nuclear Trident ll D5 missile, hanging banners of Isaiah 2:4, and placing crime tape in front of the headquarters. In commemoration of the assassination of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King 50 years earlier, they confronted what King called the three great evils of racism, militarism, and materialism. Since the 1980s, the PCUSA has supported efforts to abolish nuclear weapons. In 2017 the United Nations drafted the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, and the Presbyterian Missions committee issued a statement: Nuclear Disarmament, Renewing Hope Against All Odds.
That statement calls us to renounce the false god of nuclear security and its promise of catastrophic consequences, and to take all actions such as might be effective in requiring full US compliance within the obligation to achieve nuclear disarmament under the UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons.
The Trident nuclear submarine base is here in our home state, and it is time to renew our commitment to nuclear disarmament.
