Dear Members and Friends of Nacoochee Presbyterian Church,
I have big news to share: The church’s Finance Committee and the Session are establishing what the business world often calls a BHAG —a Big, Hairy, Audacious Goal! It is this:
TO PAY OFF OUR MORTGAGE BY JULY 31, 2021!
Why that date? So we can “burn the mortgage” on our new addition while celebrating our church’s 151st anniversary on the first weekend of August. (We planned to celebrate our 150th anniversary during a Homecoming event this past August, but Covid-19 got in the way.)
For over a year we have been enjoying the benefits of the new addition and parking lot that have made our church much more accessible to those with disabilities and also more inviting and functional for everyone. Those benefits were made possible by a highly successful Capital Campaign, plus a comparatively small loan to cover the balance of the construction cost. Now, by joining our efforts, we have an opportunity to make that loan balance go away.
The Capital Campaign, which began in 2017 and officially ended in May, 2020, was an amazing success that allowed a great many of our community of faith to contribute a generational gift to Nacoochee Presbyterian Church. The consultant who helped us with that campaign estimated that we would do well to reach a goal of $550,000 from 70 pledges. In the end, over 90 pledges were received totaling $775,120! In addition, other unpledged gifts to the capital fund brought the total amount pledged and received to a little over $947,000! To date, a little more than 92% of the funds pledged have been received. Our work will redound to the benefit of many generations beyond ours. Thank you!
The total cost of our project (which included concept development, a parking area, additional bathrooms, a meeting room, a large storage area, and engineering and site preparation for future work) was $1,113,567. We have paid this amount down to the point that as of the end of August we owe $273,336.
Here’s what the Finance Committee, the Session, and I propose:
Let’s pay off this loan by the time we celebrate our “150-plus-1 Anniversary” on the first weekend of August 2021!
We realize that these are hard times for many in our community. This request is not meant in any way to place an undue burden upon anyone, and we do not make it lightly. Rather, if you made a three-year pledge originally, we are simply asking that you consider adding a fourth year’s payments, thus in effect increasing your pledge by 33 percent. Some have already done so, knowing of the need to pay off the loan balance soon.
If you are new to our congregation or simply were unable to make a pledge in the first campaign, we ask that you consider being a part of this push to pay off the debt. In either case, once you have made your decision, please notify the church office by letter, email message, or phone call. Know that your gift will be deeply appreciated and very useful in continuing to carry out the work we are called to do as a community of faith.
Let’s burn our mortgage at Homecoming 2021!
Grace and peace,
