The Case for Sunday School

Now that the 2022-2023 school year is upon us, Sunday School for children and youth will start back at Nacoochee Presbyterian this Sunday, August 7.
The Christian Education Committee hopes to offer three classes: one for pre-readers, probably ages 3 to 5; one for elementary-age children, first through fifth grades; and one for youth, sixth grade through twelfth grade.
But the only way to offer three classes is to considerably increase our number of available teachers. And that means you.
Sunday School for children and youth meets during our worship hour, so, yes, if you teach Sunday School, you’ll have to miss worship on occasion to do so. We don’t want or expect you to teach every Sunday. We’d love to have enough teachers so everyone can teach once or twice per month.
Curriculum will be provided to you. You won’t have to make up your own lesson plans, or copy your own handouts, worksheets, or color sheets. Materials needed for your class will be provided by the Christian Ed leaders.
If we can staff three classes for children and youth:
Young children, ages 3 to 5, will learn that God loves them, that God sent Jesus to live on earth and teach people about God’s love. They’ll learn Bible stories, and that the Bible is a very old book that has lots of stories to tell and lessons to teach people of all ages.
Older children will learn that the Bible is a library and that it is organized by book, chapter, and verse. They’ll learn how to locate specific verses in the Bible, and they’ll begin to learn what it means to be a Christian, to follow the teachings of Jesus, and to be the kind of people who serve God by serving others.
Youth (teens and tweens) will learn to develop the mind of Christ – to have compassion for the poor and sick, to be humble, wise, and courageous, to have faith, to promote justice, and to show mercy. They will learn how the ministry of Jesus still teaches followers a way to live toward God and others that is very different from a life driven primarily by selfish ambitions. Additionally, they will learn to be good stewards of the gifts of God – the earth our home, its resources, and our own time and talents.
Please consider helping Nacoochee Presbyterian Church carry on our long tradition of teaching children and youth to be faithful disciples of Jesus. Volunteer to teach a class, perhaps change a life. Follow this link to sign up: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/70a084ba9ab2ea3f49-sunday
