Claire Hiscox provided an outstanding review and discussion at the December meeting of the NPC Book Club. The featured book was “Before We Were Yours,” written by Lisa Wingate and published by Ballantine Books in 2017.
The story was set in Tennessee in the 1930s and featured activities of the Tennessee Children’s Home Society. In short, the Home profited from kidnapping children of poor families and placing them for a large fee with prominent, well-to-do families of the day. Sometimes women who gave birth in a hospital were told that their babies had died; sometimes they unknowingly gave up their parental rights. Impoverished conditions of the Great Depression era in East Tennessee often resulted in the children growing up in a situation with greater privileges.
The next NPC Book Club meeting will be Monday, January 13, 2020, at 2:00 pm in Fellowship Hall. The featured book is The Woman in the Window, by A. J. Finn. Discussion leader will be Sandy Snow.
